Friends,
It is with the most sincere sense of gratitude that I write to thank you for all of your support these past several months. We ran an extraordinary campaign, and while we won in the suburbs, we fell short in the city, and the 129,402 votes we received yesterday was not enough to secure a victory. While I knew that winning was a statistical improbability given our position on the ballot, I also knew that this was a campaign worth running for an agency that demands our attention. From elevating the environmental challenges facing us here in Cook County to inviting scrutiny of how $1.7 billion of our tax dollars are spent, we have educated the media and the public about the Water Reclamation District, and in so doing have accomplished a great deal.
To say I am grateful would be a gross understatement. I have been humbled and amazed by the outpouring of support from literally thousands of you. You have driven with me to Midlothian at 5:30am to meet voters, you have signed and passed my petitions to get me on the ballot, you have made financial contributions, you have emailed your friends, and you have voted. Campaigns are hard. Democracy is hard. And while we have worked incredibly long hours these last several months, every minute invested in this campaign, and in our democratic process, has enriched my life.
Perhaps the greatest joy in this process was the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people. The strength of our society remains in the diversity, creativity, and generosity of the people that reside here. From Nick Hornsberry – a student at the University of Chicago and our first and longest-serving intern, to Linda Pauel – my fellow candidate, consigliore, and kindred-spirit, to the countless strangers who were kind, interested, and offered passing encouragement as I met them in parades, on El platforms, and at churches; all of these people hold a special place in my heart and a debt that I cannot repay.
Because the challenges facing Cook County and Illinois persist, I too will persist and challenge you to do the same. I remain an optimist, an idealist, and a patriot. And while we acknowledged our loss, as well as the loss of a number of other progressive candidates last night, we celebrated with equal fervor the election of Toni Preckwinkle as our next County Board President.
We have our work cut out for us here in Illinois. And when the dust from the election has settled, the important work begins. I remain, as much now as ever, committed to serving the public. I invite you to get more engaged, not less, and look forward to our best days, which most assuredly lie ahead.
Faithfully yours,
Todd Connor
